The Current Development of Islamic Studies

By the establishment of Islamic Higher education at the end of 1950s, Islamic Studies in Indonesia has come into a new form. Islam was not only a set of knowledge for practice, but also an object of academic study. Since its early developments, the academic study of Islam in the Indonesian Islamic higher institutions has tried to combine the traditional model of the Middle East and the modern model of the Western scholarship. The textual and normative approach of the Middle East is enriched by the empirical and socio-historical analysis of the West, and vise-versa. The next challenge that Indonesian Muslim intellectual should face is how Islamic teachings compatible with modernity. By the coming of reformation era, at end 1990s, Indonesian has experienced another form democracy where the power of civil society and freedom are there for Indonesians. Academic study of Islam in Indonesia has to adopt and adapt to that new stream. While adjusting its position to Indonesian context, Islamic Studies in Indonesia has a mandate to reach regional as well as international recognition through various ways, exchanges, research, and conference.

The Role of Religious Institution in Combating Radicalism

Religiously based radicalism has become very important issue in the discourse of   since the involvement of religiously affiliated actors in the acts of terrorism. Religious institutions, especially religious education institutions have been in seen as the key element in the battle of reducing radicalism. The OSD 2 will discuss the state of the arts of the current position of religious education institution and their contribution in combating radicalism. Not only from the perspective of modern formal institutions, is the role of religious education institutions also seen from that of traditional educational institutions. Some key factors of combating religious radicalism will be discussed by the speakers including the ideological messages, strategies being carried out, curriculum development, community supports, and agencies getting involved and political endorsement to the effort.
